Harpoon a Fish Trophy Fish: What a Trophy Catch Is and Who Wins It

A trophy catch in Harpoon a Fish is a contested fish. How to harpoon and reel it in, how stealing another player's hooked fish works, and who wins the trophy.

A trophy catch in Harpoon a Fish is a contested catch: the moment more than one player goes for the same fish, it becomes a trophy contest, and the game's own description spells out the outcome — "Only one can catch the trophy." The winner is the player who actually reels the fish in, not whoever fired the first shot.

How to compete for a trophy catch

The game's [How To Harpoon] instructions give you the two actions every contest is built on:

  1. Aim at your target and FIRE to harpoon it.
  2. Time your reels to pull the fish in.

Landing a fish takes both parts — a well-aimed shot and correctly timed reels. Because another player can compete for the same catch while you're doing this, your harpoon only starts the contest — the catch is decided when someone lands it, so firing first doesn't guarantee you the trophy. The full reeling process is covered step by step in the how to catch fish guide.

Stealing a fish another player hooked

Stealing is a built-in part of the contest: you can harpoon a fish that another player has already hooked and take the contested catch for yourself. The game invites exactly this — "Test your skill and STEAL from others!" It cuts both ways, though: a fish you've harpooned isn't yours until it's landed, so another player can contest it the same way.

So who wins?

The player who lands the catch. A contested trophy has a single winner: whoever reels the fish in first — not whoever fired the first harpoon. If someone harpoons the same fish you're pulling and lands it before you do, they take it.

The prize is the fish itself. Any fish you land goes into your aquarium, where you grow it as a pet — and that applies to a contested catch you've stolen just the same. For what happens next, see the aquarium guide.
