Harpoon a Fish Crates: How to Open Them and What Each Box Gives

How to open crates in Harpoon a Fish, the key you need first, and what the wood, stone, stun and star (XP) boxes give: spears, XP and extra keys.

Opening a crate in Harpoon a Fish takes two things: the crate menu and a key. Click the crate button and a menu opens listing the game's boxes — the wood box, stone box, stun box and the star box (marked XP) all appear there. A locked crate tells you it needs a key; once you have one, select the box and open it, and the reward is revealed on the spot.

How to open a crate

  1. Click the crate button to bring up the crate menu.
  2. Pick a box from the list — wood, stone, stun and star (XP) are the types shown in the menu, and other box types can appear there too.
  3. If the crate shows it needs a key, get one first (known sources below).
  4. Select the crate and open it — the reward pops out immediately.

What the wood, stone, stun and star boxes give

BoxWhat it has given when opened
Wood box and stone boxSpears — one opening produced a spear that could be equipped and used right away
Stun boxA spear for fishing
Star box (XP)XP plus a bonus key

Treat these as real examples of what openings have handed out rather than a guaranteed loot list. The wood and stone boxes sit side by side in the menu as regular boxes, and the spear openings so far haven't broken down which box gave which spear.

Where crate keys come from

The key is the real gate: a crate stays locked until you supply one. Two known ways to get keys:

  • Open the star (XP) box. It has dropped an extra key when opened, so crate openings can refill your own key supply — keys aren't tied to any single source.
  • Redeem codes. Codes are the other familiar way to pick up keys; the current list lives on our Harpoon a Fish codes page.

Put the loot to work

The spears you pull from crates are usable gear, not just collectibles — one was equipped straight after opening and put to use. If you're new to the hunt itself, the how to catch fish guide covers the basics of landing your first catch with them.
